Unlocking Lifelong Transformations through Mentoring

Imagine a journey where every step you take leaves a profound impact, not only on a young person’s life but on yours as well. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program offers this unique experience —  transforming the lives of both the mentee and the mentor. Through consistent one-on-one interactions, Bigs and Littles discover shared interests and experience the surprise of laughter.

Nurturing Connections

Picture Cheryl Alters Jamison’s story. Arriving in New Mexico, she didn’t anticipate the deep impact that being a youth mentor would have on her own life. Matched with her Little, Lenore, her world expanded, embracing a culture new to her, and forming an unbreakable bond.

“Through Lenore, I was introduced to a family that welcomed me with open arms and shared New Mexican traditions I had never experienced before.” Her connection with Lenore didn’t just bloom; it thrived, evolving into a lifelong friendship. “We are still in contact over forty years later, and have been part of each other’s weddings… Lenore, her sisters, and even her father have become like family to me.”

Cheryl added that her relationship with Lenore changed her life for the better, and proudly states, “I became the first grand-sister when Lenore herself joined the program as a big sister.” She feels grateful for the wonder of the shared gifts of mentorship and for seeing the torch carried on.

Purpose and Community

The role of a Big is not just that of a friend, but also someone that the Little can look to for guidance. Trust can take a while to grow, and mentors shine when they embody consistency and trustworthiness.

Cheryl reflects upon the outstanding support she received from the staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout the whole process. Their support and guidance helped solidify her feeling that she had made the right decision getting involved.

Rollin Jones, also a Big, echoes Cheryl’s sentiment, feeling he is contributing to a stronger, more connected community. “I’m a fireman for Santa Fe City and I think it would be just as good for the kids as it would for us. We could use the outreach and the excitement of being a mentor for these kids. It’s super helpful for the guys.”

Additionally, Rollin shares that he and his Little, Cameron, continue to get together years after the mentorship. “My Little likes to snowboard. He’s older now, but we still go snowboarding every winter.”

Mentoring’s Enduring Rewards

Step into the role of a Big. You will touch lives in ways you may never have envisioned. Whether it’s a day at the park, playing games, exploring new activities, or simply talking and spending time together, mentoring is all about the joy of shared experiences and having a good time.

Imagine being part of a young person’s story, as Cheryl was for Lenore, and Rollin for Cameron. Are you ready to embark on this transformative journey? To not just change a young person’s life, but also enrich your own? When we selflessly invest in others, we become part of a cause larger than ourselves.
