Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mountain Region launched its annual 60 Mentors in 60 Days recruitment campaign, focusing on the recruitment of volunteer mentors from the community. The campaign began on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, and will continue until Friday September 15, 2023.
The nonprofit matches adult volunteer mentors (Bigs) with youth ages 5-18 (Littles), creating one-to-one mentoring relationships that positively influence the lives and futures of the kids involved. After seeing the increased difficulties youth have faced in recent years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has recognized a greater need to keep kids connected to these vital mentoring relationships.
Mentors are needed for both the Community-Based and School-Based programs. Community-Based volunteers participate in fun activities with their mentees, providing youth with caring adult role models. The minimum time commitment for both programs is only 4 hours per month. The School-Based program matches volunteers with a child at a nearby school where they meet with that child once a week during the school year. Bigs and Littles do more than talk about class, or do homework, or read together. They may share lunch, shoot hoops in the gym, play a board game, or play on the playground. It’s all about starting a friendship, providing guidance, and inspiring them to reach their potential.
Big Brothers Big Sisters needs at least 60 mentors who are passionate about igniting the potential of New Mexico’s local youth. Currently, there are nearly 200 mentees waiting to be matched with a mentor. All interested parties are highly encouraged to apply. There is also a special need for mentors who: are male, Hispanic, identify as LGBTQ+, have experience working with special needs.
BBBS also welcomes the opportunity to work with new organizations, businesses, initiatives, agencies, and community groups to help empower and uplift children in New Mexico.
